Alice Pope interview

twiggy
"Tell us a little more about Fin and your book," asked Alice Pope in her interview with me.

For the past two years, I've been secretly writing as my main character, fifteen-year-old Fin, in a Diaryland blog called "Sunshine State." I didn't want to write about myself (What I ate for breakfast. Or: What I bought at the grocery store). There's a lot of pressure on authors to blog as a way of reaching out to their readers. I'm a big fan of Megan McCafferty's "retro blog," in which she posts hilarious snippets of her high-school diary. Sarah Dessen's Livejournal features her favorite TV obsessions. I also love Blake Nelson's minimalist musings on his subway encounters with Prada-clad rock bands or the Zenlike nature of cows, etc. But I'm too shy to reveal large chunks of my private self: so I've kept an online journal under my real name, which is mostly about my publishing journey (because I'm obsessive and I like to keep track of things). At the same time, I've been blogging as Fin as my alter-ego in cyberspace.

Fin is like one of my "invisible friends" from childhood. At the same time, she is my alter ego in cyberspace. Her thoughts and dreams are based on my own, though disguised in the form of fiction.

At first, I shunned the idea of blogging. I shrugged it off as a distraction. Then, as Fin's readers began to respond to the stories, drawings and pictures I posted online, I realized that it is a valuable experience. Instead of sitting in my room, pecking away on a keyboard, I was connecting to people in an interactive universe. Writers live a very solitary life. For once, I didn't feel so alone.

Flip through Fin's photos, drawings, and diary entries here.

I had a similar idea for a novel I wanted to write for NaNoWriMo. Well the blog part anyway, not the whole thriller part of it..anyway. I had a quick question, I'm going to pick up a copy of your book, but I wanted to know what ages you think it's appropriate for. I'll probably get it just to check it out but I was thinking of gifting a copy to my 13 year old cousin. I also saw your offer on myspace to get autographs through the mail...alright I'll stop rambling now, thanks.

Thirteen is cool! (The publisher listed it as "12" and up, whatever that means).

Yes, I am giving away signed bookplates (stickers). Just write to the P.O. box on my website. I'll drop one in the mail for you! Thanks!

I've always wanted to do that. Maybe that'll be part of my NaNo... oy. I shouldn't be "maybe-ing" on day 1 of NaNo.

I never planned on writing a blog. Somehow I fell into it...just the way I used to talk to my "invisible friends."

That's cool though... sometimes things just happen and it's great!

until now i had no idea that fin was not a real person. i suppose i was being naive, thinking that i'd been lucky to have been invited into a very talented young lady's worldview for the past few years. in any case, i wish you all the best with tco.

Wow
From lifeasme66@diaryland: My goodness... I never would have guessed! I've been one of Fin's readers for maybe a little less than a year. I hardly ever comment, but I read every entry she posted. She was incredibly insightful and creative. I never would have guessed she was fictional. Great job, and I intend to read your book =) **HUGS!!**

From becks
What?! You're not Fin? Hmmmm, I always thought you were a pretty incredible writer for a 15-year-old girl. I am completely amazed. And to think - I actually gave you advice as if you really were a 15-year-old girl. Wow. I guess I'll have to check out your book now. ;)

Damned surprised
This was the most fascinating thing I have ever read, you are awesome. I love a surprise ending, or is the end? Hope not. Sandyz

What what what...?!

I thought you were REAL! When I say you, I mean Francis. You've stolen Francis away! I'm not sure whether to mope for a while or not at her sudden blogging cessation. Or whether to just be impressed. Maybe a bit of both.

I suppose that means I should buy the book...

She is real. She is me.

Dumbledore is gay, and now this???
As a result of learning this, I suppose I'm a bit more, um, bemused with myself than anything else, given that last year I nominated your blog for an under-18 category in one of those blog awards things. But that's not your fault, apart from writing so well that you caused me to want to nominate you.

Best wishes to you. I look forward to continuing to read you, no matter your voice.

WoW!
I guess you've kinda surprised most of us. Or perhaps it's just me. Nevertheless, I just wanted to let you know how much I've enjoyed the little snippets, photos and sketches of 'fin'. Best wishes, Adelnye
