where I live: day two (land crabs are blue)

  • Jun. 30th, 2008 at 7:01 AM

Florida land crabs remind me of spiders, their distant cousins, with their stalk-like eyes and slitty mouths. They march across the backyard in a conga line and plunk into the pool. After a hard rain, their holes fill up with water. Once in a while, they will even climb a tree.

So cool! I've spent a fair amount of time in Southwest Florida but have never seen a land crab (or found one in the pool!).

We used to see more of them ( before the big housing boom)...they like the saltwater marshes near Biscayne Bay.

Cool! Do they chase cats?

My cats chase them! The land crabs are wimps. If you look at them sideways they scurry away!

Yes! Their spiky legs hook into the tree bark.

We once encountered a rather saucy land crab on some lonely stretch of A1A. It stood in the road and defiantly shook a claw at us. That thing did not want to relinquish to road to us.

That is so cool! I used to live in Florida and we had the little lizards all over the place. Now I'm in Tennessee and I just have wild turkey's and black widow spiders. :-)

Wow. I'm intrigued . . . and kind of creeped out! They remind me of deep-sea creatures, looking like they come from another planet.

I love Florida, esp. the wildlife.
Manatees are my favorite animal - and this blue crab - I can't imagine seeing one prancing my me.
