where I live: day five (bird on a wire)

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 9:24 AM
twiggy

When I was little, I'd pretend that the birds were spying on me. I'd see them perching on the power lines like notes on a scale...so still, they might've been robotic. My best friend, Suzanne, would look for spray-painted codes in the sidewalks---surveyor-speak (I know now). We would make up stories about trolls tunneling under the pavement.

Back then, it felt like the entire world was keeping secrets from us.

I always noticed birds on the wires too.

and really, when you're a child, the world *is* keeping secrets. the sad part about growing up is that suddenly those secrets aren't all that interesting...

I love this entry! Chris, I love you, too. I want to hang out with you and pretend there are secret codes in the sidewalks.

That is EXACTLY how I played with my friends and my brothers when I was young. It was all about "the clues!"

Oh I love birds on a wire. I tried to get a pic of one a few days ago over the field, but I don't have much of a zoom lens.

And I wrote a story when I was a young teen about two birds who sat on the wire and discussed how foolish the people below were.

Really cool pic!

Birds on wires remind me of the Hitchcock movie. First there's just one, then, hundreds! I always wondered why they didn't get electrocuted . . .

I always wondered why they were not electrocuted, too, knowing that people on ladders should not touch the wires, etc. Love to see them lined up like that...here it is often the mockingbird that we see and hear watching us.

Crissa, your world is so so beautiful. I guess you're going to have to stop these posts at week's end or so -- I will miss them! What a gorgeous collection.

Thank you so much! And thanks for taking the time to read them. I loved reading all the entries this week and sneaking a glimpse of other worlds beyond my backyard....

Have you ever seen those bits of neon pink wire or plastic coming out of the sidewalk, likely also used by surveyors? I used to think that was a troll's hair poking up.
