I had a blast with the Herald peeps. All of them---from the writer, Laura, to the video whiz, Candace, to the photo dude, Patrick...all interesting souls. I didn't even know that the Herald made mini documentaries.
Wow, Crissa, that was so interesting! I'm a bit stunned, as I totally see myself in you. The thing you did with your hands, I do that all the time. And I see certain numbers all the time too. Right now, it's 1,2,3. Even as I type this I notice the clock says 9:23. I don't touch poles, but I know *exactly* where every knick-knack and piece of furniture should be, and if it moves I have to 'fix' it. I even used these character traits in my fallen faerie story. Don't think I've ever seen a story with an OCD faerie before, but that's what Ardis is, and as it turns out, it's her OCD nature that lets her survive a terrible curse.
When the video artist was filming me, I didn't even realize that she noticed certain things--like when I'm picking at my toes or the curtain. (I didn't even know I was doing it!) I think your faerie idea is wonderful. Yes! We must keep telling stories about real people (even in the fantasy universe!)
What a wonderful piece... So interesting and moving. Lovely the way they shot it. I liked hearing your voice - hearing you read from TCO, too. I could relate to a lot here and really love your honesty. :)
It felt a little weird...reading to an invisible audience. But the Herald people were really cool (They tried to make me feel comfortable...although it does feel like you're under a microscope!) Thanks for checking it out.
That video was amazingly great, far more powerful than any book trailer. Having watched many of these things on the NY and LA Times sites, I am shocked at how great a job Miami Herald did on this. Was this their whole doing or did you have someone doing the video for you and they hooked it up with the Herald? Either way, it's given me lots of great ideas on how to really show what a book is about. Great work!
Thanks, Greg. You and I are film people...so we get it, you know? I got along really well with the videographer from the Herald and she was open to ideas and suggestions. I am pleased with the results.
Fabulous article and unbelieavable video! Both were very compelling, informative, and insightful. Loved how the video created genuine interest in your book without hitting the audience over the head with sales talk. Very classy . . .
Thank you so much. As a film major (and freelance journalist), I could really appreciate the energy that the Herald team poured into the piece. I feel so thankful.
Crissa-- it's *awesome*! It's such a great promo for your book. It draws you in so much more, kind of like an NPR interview. Great job-- I really hope this sets the standard for more video trailers!
The octopus sounds so controlling. What a difficult monster to live with. By the same token, your ability to be aware of rhythms, numbers, colors, etc., must add greatly to your artistic skills. As a child, before you knew how to "work with" the octopus, life must have been really hard. I'm glad you have a handle on it now and that Fin gives other people hope.
I enjoyed the interview and the video was beautifully done.
My aunt has it much worse than me. I'm lucky that my "issues" are mild. One thing I've learned: All this time, I've felt like I was on the outside of things. Now people write to me and say: that's how I feel. I think a lot of writers can relate to that feeling.
Wow,nicely done by you and the people who put it together. Also, nice to get to know you better. You're a gorgeous lady and they made a gorgeous film and article.
Of course, I've been obsessing about this article (In real life, I am soooo shy). It was uber weird, watching myself in that video (I kept thinking: Does my voice really sound like that?) Yeah. The Herald ladies did a lovely job.
That's a wonderful interview...very well done. I can relate to a lot of what you talked about. My niece struggles with symptoms of OCD so I may have to pick up this book for her so she feels she's not alone with her own octopus. Thanks for having the courage to write about this and being so open and honest in the interview.
What a great article and the video was just gorgeous! The lighting and rhythm are beautiful. I'm so happy for you and your ability to channel that energy to your benefit. Congratulations, Crissa!
You should've seen the videographer setting up each shot! She was arranging everything in the living room like a movie set. It was fun to work with her. :)
thank you for being so honest. i don't have ocd but often feel stuck in my own head, wondering if the sun will shine again. i love that you tell others that they are not broken and don't need to be fixed - what a liberating thought... i have to believe in that and remember to channel that beast into something positive. thank you for sharing. -nancy
It seems like there's a magic pill to "fix" everything these days (Just turn on the TV and you're flooded with lies). I am still dealing with the beast. But sometimes it's a friendly beast. Thank you so much!
Wooooooooow! *_* That was fabulous, Crissa! Totally engaging, informative, and beautiful--I love how they worked in the art from your book trailer. Best author video ever. ^.^
