...so i moved to nyc
26th-Feb-2012 11:51 am

My apartment is a maze of boxes. No place to sit and to write. But I've been writing stories in my head like I always do in New York. It's a place that asks you to hold still and look at things.

On the subway, I take out my notebook. I wonder about the boy with the bouquet of tulips in a paper bag, the girl chewing french fries one at a time, the women in leather boots, laughing as they ask for directions, and yes, I do know the way.

On a walk to the coffee shop, I put on my headphones. There's a song that says, "The city is my church." An elderly man opens the door for me. When he smiles, I smile too.

On the fire escape, I plant an herb garden. My fingernails are crusted with dirt. I save half the seeds for later. If they don't grow, it's okay.

I moved to New York a week ago.

This morning they started to sprout.

Congratulations :) (I can't imagine living in the city -- but it would be an intriguing experience...for a short while, hehe.)

I think it's awesome that you already know your way around the city, and that (yes, oh yes!) planted seeds are beginning to sprout.

I'm surprised that the seeds grew so quickly. (hope that I don't kill them!) Yeah, I've been zipping back and forth to NYC for many years and now I can finally put away the suitcase!

Thank you! I love being in the city bc it pulls me out of my head. But I also love to escape into the parks. There are so many different worlds to explore (even rock climbing and marshes!)
26th-Feb-2012 06:48 pm (UTC) - enjoy!
Oh, how wonderful! & happy writing.
(I lived in NYC at 2 different times in my 20s, and now I love to return, & feel much more comfortable there than if I'd never experienced it...)
it is a place full of stories, for sure... have you seen Sophie Blackall's Missed Connections? based on the missed connections from Craigslist?
26th-Feb-2012 07:12 pm (UTC) - Re: enjoy!
Thank you! There's always something new to explore....no matter how many times I've visited. That's the best part. No, I haven't seen that story but I can totally imagine a whole miniseries based on missed connections....

I identify you so much with Miami. That's quite a change! I'm glad you find NYC inspiring.

Florida is still part of me (and the stories that I write). No doubt, I will keep flying back and forth like a bird....and speaking of birds....my bf gave me a stuffed owl as a welcome present. :)

Wishing you the best and all the seeds I know you'll plant. You and New York seem like a good match.

Thank you! Now that I'm up north, I hope to visit MA more often. Maybe we will cross paths at that beautiful bookstore again.

So excited for you and looking forward to more blog posts of New York moments... I'll be passing through NYC in April, maybe we could have coffee or something.
26th-Feb-2012 08:12 pm (UTC) - yay! adventure!
Yes! I'll be back in FL for a library event in mid-April. When are you passing through NY? You are always welcome to visit!

:)

I'm doing an event at Oblong in Rhinebeck on 4/22 and change trains in the city. I'll probably have time before I head back on 4/23. (Unless you have a couch to crash on, I'd take a NYC day, but I haven't tried to solicit crash spots...I don't expect anyone in the city to have space.)
26th-Feb-2012 08:43 pm (UTC) - Re: yay! adventure!
We have a couch and a kitten and never-ending cups of tea and...yeah...come on over!
26th-Feb-2012 08:55 pm (UTC) - Re: yay! adventure!
oh that would be lovely!! would it be okay if I stayed 4/21 or is that too close to your Florida trip? (otherwise it could be 4/23.)
26th-Feb-2012 09:01 pm (UTC) - Re: yay! adventure!
Yes, that's cool. No manatees but sometimes you'll see a flock of green parrots swooping like fish in the sky.
26th-Feb-2012 09:11 pm (UTC) - Re: yay! adventure!
Ooh... well, I like parrots too. Birds are my favorite anyway. Even if I get jealous of them.

I am so happy for you. No matter where you keep your tea pot, when you can smile at your beloved each day- THAT is a true home.

Wise words. So true! <3

Wow - that's a big change! And a dream come true.

I'm see a lot of growth in your future.
27th-Feb-2012 02:53 pm (UTC)
A dream for many years...it took a while to get here. But that's okay.
27th-Feb-2012 08:23 am (UTC)
I love NYC. Enjoy!
27th-Feb-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
Me too!!! :)

Welcome to NY, Crissa!

I'm not too far away from the city (and not there very often), but would love to see you some time when you're settled in. :)
27th-Feb-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
Yes! I would love to hang out soon.
